Slice
through the ice passages of Antarctica on an educational tour offered
through Oakton Community College's travel/study program. Trips for
2004 are scheduled for weekly departures through the month of March.
Tours vary in length from nine to 19 nights, depending on the selected
departure date.
As travelers
are transported by ship through the icy waters of Antarctica, the
expedition leader maximizes adventure opportunities while balancing
weather and safety issues. Spectacular views and impressive wildlife
promise visual interest as the trip stops at research stations such
as Pleneau Island, Port Lockroy, and Paradise Bay. Travelers also
may choose to camp overnight "on the ice" (equipment provided and
included in the basic fee).
The tour
also includes a variety of educational lectures including "Antarctic
Ecosystems," "Seabirds: Ocean Wanderers," "Polar Madness: Race for
the Poles," and "Triumph and Tragedy: Poles Achieved." A kayaking
excursion also is offered for an additional charge.
Tour
itineraries are adjusted based on daily weather and ice conditions.
