Oakton sophomore Jessica Baldino of Glenview was named to the
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Women's
Cross Country All-American Team for her outstanding accomplishments
in competitive running.
Baldino,
a native of Indiana, was named to the First Team by virtue of her
Top 10 finish at the NJCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country
Championships in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 5. In the 5K race,
Baldino finished 8th with her time of 19:01. More than 24 colleges
and 180 runners from across the nation competed in the event. Her
other season accomplishments include being named NJCAA Region IV Women's
Cross Country Runner of the Year and the Skyway Conference Women's
MVP Runner of the Year.
"What's
amazing is that Jessica has only been running competitively for one
year, and already is one of the best runners in Oakton's history,"
says athletic director Dave Cole. Cole added that Baldino is enrolled
in Oakton's nursing program and plans to transfer to a four-year institution
in the fall. She already has received cross country and track scholarship
offers from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Central Methodist
University, and North Park University.
This
marks the 36th time an Oakton athlete has received All-American honors
from the NJCAA. Baldino will next compete at the NJCAA Division I
Half-Marathon Championships in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Saturday,
Nov. 19.
