For the
first time in its history, Oakton Community College has three baseball
players touted as "Players to Watch" by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Two Oakton
hitters and one pitcher were listed as top junior college baseball
players in the nation as chosen by junior college baseball coaches
in the Jan. 2, 2004 issue of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper,
an authority of amateur baseball for 40 years.
Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper named Brandon Cox, 22, as the top designated
hitter in junior college baseball. Cox, a native of Atlanta, Ga.,
was the 2003 Co-MVP for Oakton last season driving in 65 runs and
hitting 15 home runs while batting .393. The 6' 1" right-hander batter
also belted 17 doubles and five triples last season.
Bryant
Perdomo, 19, was listed fourth among all junior college shortstops
in the nation. The Wheeling native batted .363 for Oakton last season
and was named to the Skyway Conference All-Conference First Team.
The
publication also dubbed Eddie Spychalski, 20, one of the top
right-handed pitchers in junior college baseball. A graduate of Driscoll
Academy in Addison, the 6' 7" hurler throws over 90 MPH and last year
was listed by Baseball America as one of the "Top 50 High School
Prospects."
"To have
three players named to this elite group is a wonderful honor to our
program," said Mike Pinto, Oakton's head baseball coach. "These men
have worked very hard, and I am extremely proud of them."
The Raiders
finished the 2003 campaign with a record 41 wins while capturing the
Region IV Sectional Championship. Oakton starts the 2004 baseball
campaign March 13 in Fort Pierce, Fla. and plays its first home game
March 22 against Joliet.
