The Oakton
Community College baseball team placed three players on the 2004 National
Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV All-Region Team.
Named
to the All-Region first team were sophomore outfielder Brandon Cox
(Dunwoody) and sophomore right-hand pitcher Eric Johnson (Maine West).
Cox is batting .389 with 44 runs batted in and six home runs. Johnson,
ranked as the top pitcher in NJCAA Division II, boasts a 5-1 record
along with a miniscule 0.96 earned run average. Named to the second
team, freshman right-hand pitcher Eddie Spychalski (Driscoll Catholic)
rounds out the NJCAA Region IV All-Region Team for the Raiders. The
6'6" pitcher sports a 4-1 record with two saves and a 3.10 earned
run average.
In addition
to the NJCAA Region IV All Region selections, the Raiders also placed
eight players on the 2004 Skyway Conference All-Conference Team. Named
to the Skyway Conference First Team were Johnson, Cox, sophomore first
baseman Jeff Wertepny (Elk Grove Village), and sophomore shortstop
Bryant Perdomo (Wheeling).
Making
the Skyway Conference Second Team were Spychalski, freshman infielder
Guy Battista (Notre Dame), freshman right-hand pitcher John McGowan
(Schaumburg), and sophomore outfielder John Uribe (Notre Dame).
The Raiders
(32-15) advanced to the NJCAA Region IV Championship with their 10-9
victory over College of Lake County on May 9. This is the second year
in a row under head coach Mike Pinto that the Raiders have won the
NJCAA Region IV Sectionals.
Oakton
will begin play in the NJCAA Region IV Championship on May 14 at 12
p.m. when they travel to Black Hawk College in Moline to play Kankakee.
Last
season, the Oakton baseball team set a Raiders record, finishing the
season 41-11.
