Oakton
head baseball coach Mike Pinto has been named Community
College Coach of the Year by the Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago. Pinto
will receive the award Jan. 16, 2005, in ceremonies at the Donald
E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.
Under
Pinto, the Oakton baseball team achieved several milestones during
the 2004 season. The Raiders compiled a 33-17 record, finishing third
in the NJCAA Region IV Finals, the highest achievement of any baseball
team in Oakton's history. For the second year in a row, Oakton won
the NJCAA Region IV Sectional Championship and the pitching staff
was ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Region IV. In his two seasons at Oakton,
Pinto has an impressive 74-28 record (.756 winning percentage).
"This
is a tremendous honor, because it comes from an organization that
maintains the highest commitment to the sport," said Pinto.
Established
by major league scouts in 1942, the Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago
honors individuals in professional baseball, and raises money to promote
the sport. Last year's honorees included Mark Prior, Dusty Baker,
and Bo Jackson.
