Bluestem Festival Revisits 1950s
The
2005 Bluestem Festival of the Arts and Humanities revisits
the 1950s, a decade that gestated rock 'n' roll, civil rights, and
major changes in art, literature, and U.S. foreign policy. Eight great
events are scheduled June 6 - 9 at the Ray Hartstein Campus of Oakton
Community College, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
This year's festival, "1950s: Prosperity, Protest, Paranoia," offers
entertaining presentations on the people and events that shaped both
the decade and the nation, including:
- "The
Blacklist: Hollywood's High Noon" chronicles Sen. Joseph
McCarthy's infamous "witch hunt" of suspected Communist sympathizers
(Monday, June 6, 10 -11:30 a.m.);
- "Art
of the 1950s"
examines post-war art trends (Tuesday, June 7, 10 - 11:30 a.m.);
- "Civil
Rights: In the Beginning"
explores the early days of the civil rights movement, including its
strategies and key personalities (Wednesday, June 8, 10 - 11:30 a.m.);
- "That
Old Time Rock 'n' Roll"
features guitarist Fernando Jones in a showcase of songs by Elvis
Presley, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, and others (Wednesday, June 8,
5 - 6 p.m.); and
- "The
Outbreak of the Korean War"
looks at the "winnability" of the conflict, and how the United Nations
handled its first major challenge (Thursday, June 9, 10 - 11:30 a.m.).
The
fee to attend the entire Bluestem Festival series is $45, or $10 per
individual lecture. For more information, contact Leona Hoelting at
