Explore
how Chicago's cultural landscape has dramatically changed over the
last four decades during Oakton Community College's 2008 Bluestem
Festival of the Arts and Humanities. Eight great events are
scheduled June 2 - 5, at Oakton Community College, 7701 N. Lincoln
Ave., Skokie.
This
year's Bluestem Festival, "Chicago's Best and Brightest II,"
celebrates the planners, politicians, sculptors, architects, engineers,
and gardeners responsible for transforming the "city of broad shoulders"
into a renowned travel destination. Featured programs include:
"Millennium
Park: The World's Window to Chicago" considers the unique
combination of resources needed to develop this award-winning project.
The lecture also covers major contributors to the park's overall success
(Monday, June 2, 10 - 11:30 a.m.);
"Chicago
Streets: Diamonds in the Rough" introduces some of the most
interesting people and places veteran Chicago Tribune columnist
and WGN Radio host Rick Kogan has encountered over the years (Tuesday,
June 3, 10 - 11:30 a.m.);
"Grant
Park Music Festival: The People's Music" honors the nation's
last remaining municipally-funded classical musical festival (Wednesday,
June 4, 10 - 11:30 a.m.); and
"Celluloid
Chicago" highlights the movies that have made Chicago famous,
from The Blues Brothers to Heath Ledger's final film, The
Dark Knight. Find out what attracts producers of blockbuster
movies, independent films, and TV series (Thursday, June 5, 10 - 11:30
a.m.).
The
fee for the entire Bluestem Festival series is $45; individual lectures
are $10 each.
