Genius inspired by adversity is at the core of Oakton Community College's
2006 Bluestem Festival of the Arts and Humanities.
Eight great events are scheduled June 5 - 8 at the Ray Hartstein Campus,
7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
The
theme of this year's Bluestem Festival, "Come Rain or Come
Shine," celebrates the vision of people inspired by adversity.
Programs include:
"Water,
Water Everywhere: Flood Stories in World Religions" explores
how many religions include sensational accounts of great floods (Monday,
June 5, 10 - 11:30 a.m.);
"The
Impressionists: Artists in the Sun" examines how 19th century
impressionist painters were stimulated by light, and how this dramatic
use of color became a stepping stone for 20th century artists (Tuesday,
June 6, 10 - 11:30 a.m.);
"A
Soprano for All Seasons" musically demonstrates how many
legendary composers were inspired by the weather (Wednesday, June
7, 2 - 3:30 p.m.); and
"Resilience
in the Face of Catastrophe: Cultural Mechanisms for Survival"
takes an anthropological look at the ways in which people in New Orleans
and other stricken areas are able to survive and rebuild their lives
(Thursday, June 8, 1 - 2:30 p.m.).
The fee for the entire Bluestem Festival series is $45; individual
lectures are $10 each. The complete program schedule may be found
