Bluestem Festival Examines 1950s Culture and Politics
Travel
back to the 1950s to examine the decade's culture and politics during
the 2005 Bluestem Festival of the Arts and Humanities. Eight great
events are scheduled June 6 - 9 at Oakton Community College, 7701
N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
This
year's festival, "1950s: Prosperity, Protest, Paranoia," offers entertaining
presentations on the people and events that shaped both the decade
and the nation, including:
-
"That Old Time Rock 'n' Roll"
features guitarist Fernando Jones in a showcase of songs by Elvis
Presley, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and other musical
pioneers. Be prepared to sing along (Wednesday, June 8, 5 - 6 p.m.);
- "The
Blacklist: Hollywood's High Noon"
examines Sen. Joseph McCarthy's infamous "witch hunt" of suspected
Communist sympathizers. The classic films High Noon and Invasion
of the Body Snatchers will be considered as reflections of the
anxieties and concerns shared by 1950s filmmakers and audiences (Monday,
June 6, 10 -11:30 a.m.); and
- "South
Pacific" presents
a lecture on heroism and prejudice as portrayed in the Tony Award-wining
Rodgers and Hammerstein musical (Thursday, June 9, 1 - 2:30 p.m.).
The
fee to attend the entire Bluestem Festival series is $45, or $10 per
individual lecture. For more information, contact Leona Hoelting at
