Oakton Explores the Cinematic Arts


From international masterpieces of the silver screen to nationally acclaimed movie blockbusters, the Oakton Emeritus program has several new classes in the cinematic arts.

Vive Le France: The Cinematic Landscape of France, Post-World War II to the Present (HUM E94-71, Touch-Tone 08734) examines the artistic vision of legendary French filmmakers and views some of their cinematic "gems," including Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Laurent Cantet's Time Out. This six-week class meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 18. The course fee is $100.

Howard Hawks: American Auteur (HUM E95-71, Touch-Tone 08735), taught by independent filmmaker Mike Robins, highlights the career of this legendary filmmaker and explores his use of various themes, including professionalism, self-respect, and group responsibility. This eight-week class meets from 2 to 5 p.m., Mondays, beginning March 31. The course fee is $110.

The Art of Alfred Hitchcock: Big Movies in Little Places (HUM E97-71, Touch-Tone 08737) examines the ingenious use of restricted sets in three Hitchcock classics: Lifeboat, Dial M for Murder, and Rear Window. This six-week course meets from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesdays, beginning March 22.

Other film classes offered are Movies, The Frescoes of Our Time (HUM E75) and Friday Afternoon at the Movies (HUM E74).

Students age 60 and above who reside within Oakton's district pay half-tuition for Emeritus noncredit classes. People who have registered for Oakton classes may register using the Touch-Tone system by dialing 847-635-1616. Touch-Tone registration requires payment using a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover).
