With
its standout performance in 2007, the College Bowl team at Oakton
Community College is one victory away from going to the state finals
for the sixth time in eight years.
Oakton
captured first place in the fall tournament held Friday, Nov. 30,
winning all four games against the College of Lake County and McHenry
County College. The victory advanced the team to the spring 2008 College
Bowl Regional Tournament, which will be hosted by Oakton. A victory
at the spring tourney would place Oakton in the state championship.
Team
members include Ed McGrath of Glenview (captain);
Nicholas Dehning of Park Ridge; Vrushank
Shah of Des Plaines; Steve Spera of Des
Plaines; and Cheryl Valloni of Des Plaines. McGrath,
who scored the most points in the tournament, and Dehning were named
to the All-Region Team. The squad is coached by John Stryker, assistant
professor of mathematics.
"Our
team performed well to win the November tournament," said Stryker.
"We're hoping the momentum carries over to allow us to again advance
to the state tournament."
Started
in 1993, College Bowl is an intercollegiate academic quiz competition
in which participants are challenged in their knowledge of current
events, history, math, geography, sports and literature. Tournaments
are co-sponsored by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association
and the Illinois Community College Student Activities Association.
