More
than 60 individual presentations, including several by prominent guest
speakers, comprise Oakton Celebrates Cultures Week, March 5 - 9 at
both Oakton Community College campuses, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines,
and 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. All programs are free and open to
the public.

Week highlights include:
Surviving
the Holocaust (9:30 - 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 7, Room
P103, Skokie) provides a chilling, firsthand account of what it was
like to be forced to hide from the Nazis, by Aaron Elster, vice president
of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Several other
Holocaust seminars, including presentations on the new Holocaust Museum
in Skokie, and the liberation of concentration camps at the end of
World War II, also are scheduled.
Mr.
Taps (12 - 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, Cafeteria, Des Plaines)
is a performance by Ayrie King III, a.k.a."Mr. Taps," who has amazed
audiences with his fancy footwork at legendary venues such as the
Apollo Theater and Cotton Club.
Ethnic
Broadcasting in Chicago (1 - 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 7,
Room 1606, Des Plaines) is an update on the current state of ethic
broadcasting in the nation's third largest media market by representatives
from TV Asia, Asian American Network, and Telemundo Chicago.
Pop!
Bam! Zoink! A Rip-Roaring Look at Comics (1 - 2 p.m., Monday,
March 5, Room 1604, Des Plaines) is a presentation on the history
of comic books in America by comic book expert and collector John
Choi.
"The
Journey" - National Geographic's Genographic Research Project
(Student Street/Room 1550, Des Plaines) is a global study that researchers
hope will shed light on genetic heritage. Throughout the week, Oakton
students and faculty will share their experiences as part of this
five-year project, which is designed to assemble the world's largest
DNA collection in order to determine how humankind populated the planet.
Also on display will be a world map illustrating migratory routes
and research results for more than 50 Oakton participants.
Cultures
Week also includes Oakton's annual Modern Languages Film Festival,
a screening of several award-winning international films.
