Oakton Celebrates Cultures Week March 5 - 9

More than 60 individual presentations, including several by prominent guest speakers, comprise Oakton Celebrates Cultures Week, March 5 - 9 at both Oakton Community College campuses, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, and 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. All programs are free and open to the public.

Cultures Week highlights include:

Surviving the Holocaust (9:30 - 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 7, Room P103, Skokie) provides a chilling, firsthand account of what it was like to be forced to hide from the Nazis, by Aaron Elster, vice president of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. Several other Holocaust seminars, including presentations on the new Holocaust Museum in Skokie, and the liberation of concentration camps at the end of World War II, also are scheduled.

Mr. Taps (12 - 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, Cafeteria, Des Plaines) is a performance by Ayrie King III, a.k.a."Mr. Taps," who has amazed audiences with his fancy footwork at legendary venues such as the Apollo Theater and Cotton Club.

Ethnic Broadcasting in Chicago (1 - 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, Room 1606, Des Plaines) is an update on the current state of ethic broadcasting in the nation's third largest media market by representatives from TV Asia, Asian American Network, and Telemundo Chicago.

Pop! Bam! Zoink! A Rip-Roaring Look at Comics (1 - 2 p.m., Monday, March 5, Room 1604, Des Plaines) is a presentation on the history of comic books in America by comic book expert and collector John Choi.

"The Journey" - National Geographic's Genographic Research Project (Student Street/Room 1550, Des Plaines) is a global study that researchers hope will shed light on genetic heritage. Throughout the week, Oakton students and faculty will share their experiences as part of this five-year project, which is designed to assemble the world's largest DNA collection in order to determine how humankind populated the planet. Also on display will be a world map illustrating migratory routes and research results for more than 50 Oakton participants.

Cultures Week also includes Oakton's annual Modern Languages Film Festival, a screening of several award-winning international films.
