Darfur
Diaries: Message from Home, a documentary that examines
atrocities in the African nation of Sudan, where at least 400,000
civilians have died since 2003, will be shown at 2 p.m., Thursday,
Oct. 12, in the TenHoeve Center at Oakton Community College, 1600
E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. The screening is free, and the public is
invited.
Depicting
crowded refugee camps and burned-out villages, Darfur Diaries
also features eyewitness accounts of many individuals affected by
the conflict. In the course of their work, independent filmmakers
Aisha Bain, Adam Shapiro, and Jen Marlowe interviewed fighters resisting
the Sudanese government, as well as teachers, students, parents, and
community leaders.
The
screening will be followed by a Q-and-A session with Marlowe, a four-year
veteran of the Seeds of Peace Center for Coexistence in Jerusalem.
Bain and Shapiro both hold positions with Global Rights, an international
human rights organization.
