News Release |
On Monday, Oct. 29, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Oakton Community College and the Circuit Court of Cook County Second Municipal District Family Violence Coordinating Council will sponsor More Reflections on Domestic Violence... The Multicultural Perspective. The symposium will be held at Oakton's Des Plaines campus, 1600 East Golf Road, and is open to professionals, advocates and community members interested in the cultural dynamics of domestic violence.
Margaret Abraham, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Hofstra University, N.Y., will be the morning speaker. Abraham is a well-known scholar who has been involved in research and activism in the field of domestic violence for a decade. In her recent book, Speaking the Unspeakable: Marital Violence Among South Asian Immigrants in the United States, she explains how immigrant status, cultural assumptions and unfamiliarity with American social, legal, economic, and other institutions make women especially vulnerable to abuse.
Eight culturally diverse workshops will be offered in the afternoon to explore, in depth, how tradition, religion and culture relate to domestic violence. Participants will learn how Chicago area agencies are reaching out in communities to provide culturally sensitive services for all their clients. Workshops will feature practitioners from the African American, Eastern European, Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgender, Islamic, Korean, Latino, Jewish and South Asian communities.
The registration fee is $15 for the symposium and box lunch, or $25 for participants who register for continuing education credits. Registration by credit card is available by fax to (847) 635-1448. For more information call (847) 635-1603.
