Researcher
and international lecturer Stuart W. Twemlow, M.D., will present the
domestic violence workshop, "Streets, Schools, and Family
War Zones," 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Oakton
Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. The symposium is
part of a continuing series on domestic violence presented by Oakton's
Alliance for Lifelong Learning and the Circuit Court of Cook County's
Second Municipal District Family Violence Coordinating Council. The
presentation will address the complex issues involved in family violence.
Open
to community advocates and professionals working in the field of domestic
violence, symposium participants will gain a better understanding
of: the correlation between power dynamics and violence in the family;
what it means to be stuck in a "victim's mindset"; the roles of victim,
bully, bystander, and ally; the appropriate levels of intervention;
and helpful actions in counteracting the culture of violence.
Twemlow
is the co-author of Creating a Peaceful School Learning Environment:
A Program for Elementary Schools and is a professor of psychiatry
at Baylor School of Medicine. He served on the Academic Advisory Council
of the U.S. Presidential Campaign Against Youth Violence and is a
former FBI consultant on threat assessment and school violence.
