Oakton Community College has
been approved by the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral
Agencies (INCCRRA) to offer training toward early childhood credentialing,
College officials announced.
Starting in the fall 2008 semester, Oakton’s Early Childhood
Education Center will offer credentials in Early Care and Education,
Levels 2-4; Infant Toddler Specialization, Levels 2-4; and Early Childhood
Administration, Level 1. The expanded credentialing authorization
comes from INCCRRA, a resource for making high quality, affordable
early care and education options available for children and families
in Illinois.
Oakton was one of 14 state institutions of higher education approved
to pilot a credentialing program for Gateways to Opportunity last
spring. Formed by the Professional Development Advisory Council (PDAC),
Gateways to Opportunity works to identify core knowledge, skills,
and prerequisites for early child care and education practitioners.
This process attempts to standardize qualifications, education, and
training requirements, and provides an easier way for practitioners
to earn increased education and higher salaries.
Gateways to Opportunity is supported by the Illinois Network of Child
Care Resource and Referral Agencies. Funding is provided by the Illinois
Department of Human Services, Joyce Foundation, and McCormick Tribune
Foundation.
