The
Ecology Club at Oakton Community College has added more than 180 new
trees and shrubs to the Des Plaines campus, in support of the College's
new strategic goal to "respect, conserve, and improve the environment."
"This
effort triples the number of native tree and shrub varieties on campus,"
says Alan Kroeger, president of the Ecology Club and assistant naturalist
at Oakton. "These new plantings will help prevent soil erosion and
runoff, and allow environmental science students to become more proficient
in identification and research."
Volunteers
consisting of Oakton students, faculty, and staff spent two days planting
26 varieties of trees and 26 varieties of shrubs, including pawpaws,
bald cypress, and black chokeberries. Located on the Des Plaines River,
Oakton's campus includes 55 acres of restored woodlands, wetlands,
native seed gardens, and reconstructed prairie. The College initiated
a program to revitalize natural areas in 1992, and conservancy remains
an ongoing priority.
