EMERITUS SEMINARS ARE YOUR TICKET TO WORLD CINEMA

Examine the social and political influence of cinema on world cultures during the following non-credit seminars offered this spring by Oakton's Emeritus program. All seminars meet at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7703 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.

Movies: The Frescoes of Our Time (HUM E75-71, Touch-Tone 06195), probes the culture of foreign countries through film. Students will view the work of filmmakers from Iran, France, Japan, Germany and Canada, and discuss how the films deal with such issues as displacement, cultural assimilation, honor and tradition. The seminar meets from 2 - 5 p.m. for eight Mondays, beginning Jan. 28. The fee is $90.

Illuminations and Revelations: The Human Experience in World Cinema (HUM E86-71, Touch-Tone 07939) will draw on films from Iran, India, Senegal, and the U.K. to explore questions of identity, the meaning of existence, and the mysteries of human nature. The seminar meets from 12 - 3:15 p.m. for six Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 19. The fee is $100.

The New American Cinema: Films of the '70s Renaissance (HUM E87-71, Touch-Tone 07940) examines the cultural and historical setting that gave birth to this fertile period in American filmmaking. Study some of our country's greatest filmmakers, including Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Polanski, Martin Scorcese and others. The seminar meets from 12 - 3:15 p.m. for four Tuesdays, beginning April 16. The fee is $80.

Students age 60 and over who live in the district pay half the listed price. Students who have registered for ALL classes in the last five years, or a credit class in the last three years, may register using the Touch-Tone system by dialing (847) 635-1616 or by fax at (847) 635-1448. Both methods require payment using a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover).
