From Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War to the current war on terrorism, the Oakton Emeritus Program offers four new courses on issues surrounding America's most significant military conflicts.Wartime Economics: Awash in Red (POL B08-61, Touch-Tone 04750) examines the U.S. government's fiscal and economic policy from World War II to the current war on terrorism, with Julie Strauss, Ph.D. The eight-week class meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Fridays, beginning Oct. 11. The course fee is $100.
Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War (HIS E84-61, Touch-Tone 04739), taught by Civil War aficionado Gene Salecker, looks at how President Lincoln answered his country's call and became a great "wartime" president. The two-week class meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays, beginning Oct. 4. The course fee is $30.
Europe, 1919-1939: Origins of World War II (HIS E85-61, Touch-Tone 04811) studies the rise of fascism, the "Red Menace," and the results of economic and political appeasement policies. Taught by history buff Jim O'Neill, the three-week class meets from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Mondays, beginning Sept. 23. The course fee is $40.
The Beginnings of the Modern Middle East: Impact of the First World War (Part II) (HIS E86-61, Touch-Tone 04740), taught by John Binder, Ph.D., explores various issues that affect this region, such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, international terrorism, and the modernizing influences of the West. The five-week class meets from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning Oct. 2. The course fee is $60.
