Raising
awareness of global hunger and money for deserving food charities
are the primary goals of "Empty Bowls at Oakton," 10:30 a.m.
- 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf
Road, Des Plaines.
For
a $10 donation, participants select a handcrafted bowl they would
like to keep, and receive a simple meal of soup and bread as a reminder
of those in need. More than 800 bowls have been made and donated by
local potters, artists, schools, and others. Additional funds will
be raised through the sale of raffle tickets to win a unique selection
of functional artwork.
Sponsored
by the Ceramics Club at Oakton Community College, this year's event
will benefit the Maine Township Food Pantry and America's Second Harvest,
for hurricane relief. The acoustic duo Patchouli will perform original
songs about healing and compassion.
The
"Empty Bowls" concept started in 1990, when a Michigan high school
art teacher teamed up with students to support a local food drive.
Their idea has since been used to raise millions of dollars for food
banks, soup kitchens, and other meal programs.
