Pledge
forms (download pdf form) are available to all Chicago area artists,
potters, and school art departments interested in lending their talents
to "Empty Bowls at Oakton." Sponsored by the Ceramics Club at Oakton
Community College, this event, Saturday, Dec. 4, is designed to raise
money and awareness for global hunger.
Groups
are invited to make ceramic bowls to be sold at the event. Bowls should
be approximately six inches across, three to four inches deep, and
able to hold 12 to16 ounces of soup. Potters must use certified food-safe
glazes. Please, no coiled bowls or leaded glazes.
The Oakton
Ceramics Club has set a goal of collecting 1,000 bowls for this
fundraiser, during which supporters will buy a bowl, and be served
a simple meal of soup and bread as a reminder of world hunger. All
proceeds will benefit selected Chicago area food charities.
The "Empty
Bowls" concept started in 1990, when a Michigan high school art teacher
teamed up with a group of students to support a local food drive.
Their idea has since been used to raise millions of dollars for food
banks, soup kitchens, and other meal programs.
