Oakton's English as a Second Language Classes Begin in September

English as a Second Language (ESL) classes offered this fall by Oakton's Alliance for Lifelong Learning (ALL) focus on meeting special needs or developing specific skills for intermediate-level students. These classes are meant to supplement, not replace, the free ESL classes administered by the Illinois Community College Board.

Intensive ESL helps students develop extensive language skills and cultural awareness. The 9 1/2-week class meets from 12:20 to 3 p.m. four days a week (Monday -Thursday), beginning Sept. 23, at the Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. The course fee is $200. Preregistration in person is required. Call (847) 635-1427 for information.

Composition for Intermediate ESL Students (COM A61) helps students prepare for the writing section of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) required of non-native speakers by colleges and professional accrediting agencies. Two eight-week sections of this class are offered this fall. COM A61-02 meets from 1 to 3:45 p.m. on Fridays, beginning Oct. 4, at the Ray Hartstein Campus. COM A61-04 meets from 7 to 9:45 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 1, at Niles West High School, 5701 W. Oakton St., Skokie. The course fee is $50.

Other ESL courses offered this semester include Conversational English Practice (COM A50), TOEFL Prep Seminar (COM A45), Improve Your Pronunciation (COM A29), and Citizenship Education (HIS A15). For more information, call (847) 635-1427, or visit www.oakton.edu/cont_ed.
