Oakton Faculty Honored for Teaching Excellence

Accounting professor George Heyman and mathematics instructor Eileen Blitz are the recipients of Oakton Community College's 2003 Ray Hartstein Award for Outstanding and Professional Excellence in Teaching.

Heyman, a resident of Mount Prospect who joined Oakton's faculty in 1980, specializes in teaching accounting, and is one of the organizers of the annual Illinois Accounting Teacher's Conference. He recently presented at the Seventh Annual Business/Economics Teaching Conference; his presentation, "How to Study Outside the Box," also was published at this year's Lilly Conference on College Teaching. Heyman received his bachelor's degree in teaching at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He also earned a master's of accounting science from the University of Illinois, Champaign, and an MBA from De Paul University, Chicago.

Blitz, of Glenview, is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago and Northeastern University where she earned a master's in mathematics. Blitz has been at Oakton for seven years teaching developmental math courses, including principles of arithmetic, pre-algebra, and elementary algebra. She recently assisted her department in coordinating Oakton's pre-algebra course and looks forward to contributing to learning at Oakton in the coming years.

Named for the founding chairman of Oakton's Board of Trustees, the Ray Hartstein Award is given each year to one full-time and one part-time faculty member who demonstrate excellence in teaching and respect for their students and peers. Faculty may be nominated by Oakton students and colleagues. Following a review of nominations by the Board of Student Affairs, final selections are made by the Oakton Educational Foundation Awards Committee.

Also honored with the Staff Excellence Award is Carol Wisner, administrative assistant for associate degree nursing. Wisner has been at Oakton for more than 20 years, and in addition to her regular responsibilities also participates in such programs as Futures Unlimited, which introduces eighth grade girls to math- and science-related career opportunities.

Established in 1969, Oakton Community College offers degree and certificate curricula for students preparing to earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year college or university, as well as those preparing for employment in a variety of careers. Oakton is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, Illinois Community College Board, and American Association of Community Colleges.
