OAKTON BOARD OF TRUSTEES RATIFIES THREE-YEAR FACULTY CONTRACT

Oakton Community College's board of trustees voted Tuesday to approve a new contract with the College's full-time faculty that will increase salaries and benefits by 6.32 percent per year for the next three years.

"The negotiating teams worked tirelessly through the mutual gains process to arrive at a contract that is fair, competitive, and fiscally responsible to the community," said Irene Kovala, vice president for Academic Affairs.

Following three months of negotiations, members of the Oakton Community College Faculty Association (OCCFA) voted 107 to 1 to ratify the contract. Laura Saret, president of the OCCFA, explained that the interest-based bargaining focused on meeting the diverse needs of Oakton students and faculty. "The faculty were especially pleased to arrive at innovative ways to deliver courses to students and to address the current and future needs of the community's workforce," Saret noted.

Following the board's vote, several trustees and faculty participated in a ceremonial signing of the contract's preamble. "This contract represents the College's commitment to making the institution even better than it already is," said Lynda Jerit, professor of English and coordinator of international programs."

The contract, which begins on July 1, 2002, will remain in effect until June 30, 2005.
