Oakton Presents Free International Film Fest
Several award-winning international films will be presented March 5 - 9 during the Modern Language Film Festival at Oakton Community College. Free screenings, open to the public, are scheduled at both Oakton campuses, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, and 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
Films were selected for their artistic merit, and to showcase the 11 modern languages taught at Oakton. All films are presented in the original language with English subtitles. Films are not rated and may be intended for mature audiences. This year's selections include:
- The Sea Inside (Spanish 2004), winner of the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2004 Academy Awards, is the true story of a paralyzed Spanish fisherman who pursues euthanasia.
- The Keys to the House (Italian, 2004), Italy's Oscar candidate for Best Foreign Language Film, involves a father dealing with his estranged son, who is disabled.
- Seducing Dr. Lewis (French, 2002), is Jean-Francois Pouliot's directorial debut about an island community seeking to revive its crumbling economy.
Other films include: Paradise Now (Arabic, 2005), Beijing Bicycle (Chinese, 2001), Mostly Martha (German, 2002), Ushpizin (Hebrew, 2004), Firefly Dreams (Japanese, 2001), The Way Home (Korean, 2002), My Nikifor (Polish, 2005), and The Return (Russian, 2004).
The film festival is part of Oakton Celebrates Cultures Week, which features more than 60 programs exploring the many cultures of our community.
