Illinois
college students are finding it easier to apply for financial aid
at dozens of new outreach centers sponsored by the Illinois Student
Assistance Commission. Parents and students confused about the financial
aid process are invited to visit the College Zone Outreach Center
at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road.
While
outreach centers are located at each of Illinois' 48 community colleges,
they are open to any potential college student in Illinois, regardless
of where they intend to pursue higher education. Officials hope the
new centers will encourage families to begin planning for college
when students are still enrolled in middle school (6th through 8th
grades), by providing information on how to save for college, investment
planning, and college financing.
"Our
office is committed to helping families find accurate information
about funding for college and to assist with the completion of the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid form," said Cheryl Warmann,
director of student financial assistance. "There are unscrupulous
people and organizations that prey on families desperate for options.
Our office is available to ensure that no one is tricked into paying
for information that is available free of charge."
The centers
will provide year-round, walk-in assistance during regular business
hours Mondays through Fridays. Students can get help completing the
FAFSA form and pursue other sources of federal and state aid. Counselors
also may help students find sources of other financial aid through
www.collegezone.com, ISAC's
bilingual (English and Spanish) Web site.
In addition
to the center and the Web site, college financing information is available
by calling College Zone toll-free at 1-800-899-4722.
