Community Invited to U.S. Foreign Policy Forum

A community forum entitled "How Is U.S. Foreign Policy Affecting Your Life?" will be held 1 - 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26 at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road. The public is invited to attend this nonpartisan event, made possible through a grant from By the People, a new initiative of MacNeil/Lehrer Productions. Admission and parking are free.

The forum - one of eight being held at community colleges around the country - will open with a panel discussion, followed by moderated "breakout" sessions on issues such as civil liberties, the economy, and youth education. The event concludes with a town hall-style meeting where participants can share ideas and action strategies.

In addition to creating public forums nationwide, the By the People initiative includes three national PBS specials, local PBS programs created with community organizations, and an interactive Web site (www.by-the-people.org). These efforts culminate Saturday, Oct. 16, with national PBS Deliberation Day, featuring a coordinated series of events and public TV broadcasts designed to energize the national conversation on America's role in the world.

By the People is funded in part by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Public Broadcasting System, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Foundation.
