The Oakton Community College travel/study program invites the adventurous to explore the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador. Four tours are scheduled for 2003: Jan. 11 - 24, March 1 - 14, July 5 - 18, and Aug. 30 - Sept. 12.The journey begins in Ecuador with a tour of historical Quito, the 450-year-old capital of Ecuador. Visitors will enjoy a special lunch in the home of a local family; a trip to the famous market in Otavalo, known for its woolen goods and Indian jewelry; and a performance by Jacchiqua, the Ecuadorian folklore ballet.
From Ecuador, travelers fly to Baltra, one of the 30 Galapagos Islands, and board the first-class vessel MV Santa Cruz. Each night they will enjoy an evening lecture and orientation by resident naturalists about the flora and fauna of the islands. Destinations include Tower Island, home of an extensive sea bird colony, and Santa Cruz Island, with a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station, site of international research and biological conservation programs.
Throughout the trip participants will sample native dishes at specially arranged meals and learn about the everyday lives and customs of the local people. For more information, including complete itineraries and prices, call Bea Cornelissen at 847-635-1812.
