Oakton Community College's travel/study program invites the adventurous to explore the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador. Tours are scheduled for July 21-Aug. 3, Aug. 4-17 and Oct. 6-19.
The journey begins in Quito, the 450-year-old capital of Ecuador, where you'll tour the historical center of the city and enjoy a special lunch in the home of a local family. In Otavalo, you'll visit the famous market, known for its woolen goods and Indian jewelry, and see a performance of Jacchiqua, the Ecuadorian folklore ballet.
From Ecuador, you'll fly to Baltra, one of the 30 Galapagos Islands, and board the first-class vessel MV Santa Cruz. Each night you'll enjoy an evening lecture and orientation by resident naturalists about the flora and fauna of the islands to be visited the next day. Stops include Tower Island, home of an extensive sea bird colony, and Santa Cruz Island, where you'll visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, site of international research and biological conservation programs.
