Holiday Giving Opportunities at Oakton

Student clubs at Oakton Community College are engaged in a variety of projects to help those in need during this holiday season. The community is invited to support these service efforts underway at both the Des Plaines and Skokie campuses:

Adopt a Family Fundraiser - The Student Nurses Club is raising funds to help a family they have adopted. A $15 pizza party is scheduled Saturday, Dec. 15, at Giordano's in Niles.

Annual Canned Food Drive - Student Leaders at the Ray Hartstein Campus in Skokie and Black Student Union are collecting canned, boxed and children's food for local pantries.

Casa Central - The Spanish Club seeks volunteers to purchase selected gifts for children at Casa Central. Cash donations also are accepted.

Empty Bowls - The Ceramics Club sponsors this annual event, 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8 (Des Plaines campus only). Hundreds of handcrafted bowls are sold for $12 each, with funds benefiting the Maine, Niles and Northfield Township food pantries.

Holiday Cards - The Black Student Union is providing cards and postage for all those who wish to send holiday greetings to hospitalized children and American soldiers.

Socks That Rock - The South East Asian Club is collecting warm winter socks for distribution to the homeless population of Chicago's Lower Wacker Drive.

WINGS - The Early Childhood Education Club is collecting personal hygiene and home care items (cleaning supplies, baby items, non-perishable food, etc.) for WINGS, which serves area women and their children who are escaping domestic abuse situations.

Winter Hat, Scarf, and Glove Drive - The Black Student Union is collecting winter clothing items for children served by Family Focus in Evanston.

World Books (Books for Africa) - The Phi Theta Kappa honor society is collecting college textbooks, trade paperbacks and children's books to be distributed in Africa.
