Oakton Community College is the recipient of a $41,500
grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education, College officials
announced.
The grant from the Illinois Cooperative Work Study Program will allow
Oakton to place at least 40 students into paid internships. The grant
also provides the opportunity for the College to recruit at least
10 new employers into its internship program. Oakton was among 53
Illinois colleges and universities to receive funding, and one of
just two to receive its full grant request.
“Internships enable students to reduce their dependence on education
loans, while increasing the depth and practice of their knowledge
and improving their chances for employment,” says Shannon McKenzie,
internship specialist.
Since 2000, Oakton’s paid internship program has placed 235
Illinois students into a variety of paid, practical work environments
designed to augment the classroom experience.
