OAKTON JAZZ MUSICIANS WIN AWARD

Four students from the Oakton Community College Jazz Band received Outstanding Musicianship awards at the Skyway Jazz Festival in November. A panel of professional musicians selected the winners from more than 70 individuals representing seven local community colleges.

Oakton students honored with the award include Des Plaines resident Julie Hart for trumpet; Chris Tossing of Glenview for saxophone; Les Feller of Niles for the clarinet; and Mark Fornek of Des Plaines for drums.

The annual Jazz Festival provides an opportunity for bands in the Skyway conference to play with professional jazz musicians and receive critiques of their work. Although the competition does not give "Best Band" awards, the Oakton Jazz band, under the direction of Theresa Lams, received rave reviews for its performances of "Footpath Café"; "Take Five"; and "Salute to Glenn Miller."

The Oakton Jazz Band and Combo will play a free concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, in Room 1610 at Oakton's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Gold Rd. For more information, call (847) 635-1900.
