Legendary performing artist Ella Jenkins, winner
of a Grammy award for Lifetime Achievement, celebrates "The Week of
the Young Child" at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at Oakton Community
College, 7701 N. Lincoln Avenue, Skokie.
Jenkins
is a world famous songwriter, educator, and children's advocate with
more than two dozen album and video releases on Smithsonian Folkways.
She shares with audiences the lessons she has learned from children
of many diverse cultures, and encourages audience participation in
songs, chants, poems, and games from Africa, China, and other lands.
Tickets
for Ella Jenkins at Oakton's new Art, Science, and Technology Pavilion
are $10 for adults; $7 for children under 12. Plenty of free parking
is always available at Oakton.
Families
attending the concert are asked to bring a new or gently-used book
suitable for preschool children and older, to be donated to Book Worm
Angels, a nonprofit organization that provides books to lending libraries
throughout the Chicago area.
"The
Week of the Young Child" (April 2-8) is an annual celebration sponsored
by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the
world's largest early childhood education group. This year's theme
is "Building Better Futures for All Children."
The
concert is sponsored by Oakton's Board of Student Affairs and the
Family Involvement Group of Oakton's Early Childhood Education Center,
Ray Hartstein Campus.
