Legendary Ella Jenkins Sings for Children at Oakton

Legendary performing artist Ella Jenkins, winner of a Grammy award for Lifetime Achievement, celebrates "The Week of the Young Child" at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at Oakton Community College, 7701 N. Lincoln Avenue, Skokie.

Jenkins is a world famous songwriter, educator, and children's advocate with more than two dozen album and video releases on Smithsonian Folkways. She shares with audiences the lessons she has learned from children of many diverse cultures, and encourages audience participation in songs, chants, poems, and games from Africa, China, and other lands.

Tickets for Ella Jenkins at Oakton's new Art, Science, and Technology Pavilion are $10 for adults; $7 for children under 12. Plenty of free parking is always available at Oakton.

Families attending the concert are asked to bring a new or gently-used book suitable for preschool children and older, to be donated to Book Worm Angels, a nonprofit organization that provides books to lending libraries throughout the Chicago area.

"The Week of the Young Child" (April 2-8) is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the world's largest early childhood education group. This year's theme is "Building Better Futures for All Children."

The concert is sponsored by Oakton's Board of Student Affairs and the Family Involvement Group of Oakton's Early Childhood Education Center, Ray Hartstein Campus.

To reserve tickets in advance, call Connie Porteous at 847-635-1441. Tickets also are available at the door while supplies last.
