Experience the culture, people, and wildlife of Africa on a two-week tour of Kenya sponsored by the Oakton Community College travel/study program. Four trips are scheduled for 2003: Jan. 15 - 28, June 11 - 24, Aug. 6 - 19, and Oct. 8 - 21.The tour begins in Nairobi with a visit to the Department of Paleontology at the National Museum of Kenya and a trip to Boystown, to learn about some of the social issues affecting Kenya's children. Travelers also will visit Amboseli, one of Kenya's best-known gaming parks; the "Bomas of Kenya" to view tribal villages and traditional African dancing; and the Samburu Game Reserve to observe species of wildlife seldom seen elsewhere, such as the Grevy zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa oryx.
Other excursions during the tour include Mt. Kenya National Park; Lake Nakuru, home to one million flamingos; and the Masai Mara Reserve, Kenya's finest wildlife sanctuary, where herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle can be observed.
An optional, one-week extension to Tanzania can be added to the basic tour. Stops include Lake Manyara National Park, a Serengeti safari, and a drive via the Olduvai Gorge to Ngorongoro for a full-day safari.
Throughout the trip participants will sample native dishes at specially arranged meals and learn about the everyday lives and customs of the local people. For more information, including complete itineraries and prices, call Bea Cornelissen at 847-635-1812.
