Former Oakton Student Wins Law Enforcement Award

A former Oakton Community College student has received national recognition for his work in law enforcement by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and PARADE Magazine. John Nebl, 41, a Schaumburg police officer who was enrolled in Oakton's law enforcement program in the early 1980s, earned an Honorable Mention in the 2003 Police Officer of the Year Awards.

In 1999, Nebl initiated a "Crime Free Multi-Housing" program, resulting in an 11 percent decline in police calls from Schaumburg's 18 major apartment properties. The Maine West graduate is working to establish similar programs in seven other Illinois communities.

"Oakton definitely helped me develop an interest in law enforcement," said Nebl. "This award is humbling in that it recognizes the significant impact our program has had on the community."

The awards were presented Oct. 24 at the International Association of Chiefs of Police annual convention in Philadelphia, and announced in the Oct. 26 edition of PARADE.
