International
poet, essayist, educator, and publisher Haki R. Madhubuti is
the keynote speaker for the Skyway Writers Competition and Festival,
4:30 - 10:30 p.m., Thursday, April 7, at Oakton Community College,
1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. The event is free and open to the
public. Madhubuti will speak at 7:30 p.m.
One
of the world's best-selling authors of poetry and nonfiction, Madhubuti
is the founder, publisher, and chairman of Third World Press in Chicago.
He has published 24 books including Black Men: Obsolete, Single,
Dangerous?: The African American Family in Transition (1990),
which has sold more than one million copies. Madhubuti also is the
winner of numerous literary awards, including the National Endowment
Grant for Poetry in 1983.
The
Skyway Writers Competition and Festival provides a forum for students
to perform at "open mic" readings, and have their work evaluated by
professional writers. Participants are drawn from eight community
colleges including Oakton; College of Lake County; Elgin Community
College; McHenry County College; Moraine Valley Community College;
Morton College; Prairie State College; and Waubonsee Community College.
