Saudatu Mahdi, a leading social activist and recipient
of Ms. Magazine's 2004 "Women of the Year Award," is the
keynote speaker at Oakton Community College's Women's
Day on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11.
Women's
Day explores the creative spirit of women and is part of Oakton
Celebrates Cultures Week, which also includes more than 60 free
exhibits, lectures, and films. Admission to Women's Day is $25, including
lunch, for the full-day program on Friday, March 10 ($30 at the door),
and $10 for the half-day program on Saturday, March 11 ($15 at the
door).
Since
1999, Mahdi has served as the Secretary General of the Women's Rights
Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA). She will discuss her
mission to advance human rights and improve women's lives in Nigeria
and throughout the world. Recently, Mahdi and WRAPA were successful
in winning acquittal for a Nigerian mother sentenced to death by stoning
on charges of adultery - a case that received world-wide attention.
Mahdi
will share her story, followed by a Q-and-A session, 9 - 10 a.m.,
Friday, March 10, at Oakton's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road.
On Saturday, March 11, 10 - 11:30 a.m., she will speak at Oakton's
Ray Hartstein Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie.
