Oakton, MaineStay Host Youth Depression and Suicide Workshop

Therapists, counselors, teachers, and other professionals are invited to attend "The Terrain of Depression and Suicidality in Children and Adolescents," 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 24, at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. The workshop is sponsored by Oakton's Alliance for Lifelong Learning and MaineStay Youth and Family Services in Park Ridge.

Participants will learn about current theories and best practices for the evaluation and treatment of depression and suicidality in children and adolescents. Additional topics include: primary symptoms for mood disorders; prevalence of mood disorders and suicide at different ages; depressive and suicidal behaviors; primary risk factors; and myths and warning signs.

Theresa Schultz, Ph.D., and Erin Marek, M.A., are the seminar's featured speakers. Schultz is a licensed clinical and developmental psychologist who owns TMS Psychological Services, a private practice in Oak Park, Illinois. Marek is a behavioral and developmental therapist who specializes in depression, developmental disabilities, and behavioral problems.

Registration fee of $85 includes lunch, educational materials, and Continuing Education Credits (6.5 clock hours) for social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, teachers, and other professionals (7.5 contact hours for registered nurses).
