'Mars' Weighs Balance Between Nature and Technology

"Mars," a new installation by Chicago conceptual artist and sculptor Dennis Kowalski, opens Thursday, May 8, in the William A. Koehnline Gallery at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. A free reception with refreshments is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m.

According to Kowalski, "Mars" portrays society's attempt to maintain equilibrium through the continuous process of building and destroying. "The airplane has made possible depersonalized mass killing, used so effectively during and since World War II," he says. "While increasing our mobilization, the airplane also has contributed heavily to ecological degradation."

"Mars" will be on view May 8 through June 26 during regular Gallery hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Admission is free.

For more information, call Nathan Harpaz, curator of the Koehnline Gallery, at 847-635-2633.
