Oakton
Community College ranked second among Midwest schools in a math competition
sponsored by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges
(AMATYC). Twenty-seven community colleges from Wisconsin, Illinois,
Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky took part in the competition
this fall.
"Oakton
has worked hard to develop its standing in the AMATYC competition,"
said Tingxiu Wang, Oakton professor of mathematics. "In last year's
contest, Oakton ranked fourth in the Midwest, which improved on our
10th place finish in 2002." Nationally, Oakton is ranked 33rd among
170 participating colleges - up from 53rd place in 2003, Wang added.
The top 10 Midwest schools in the Fall 2004 AMATYC Math Competition
are:
1. William Rainey Harper College, Illinois
2. Oakton Community College, Illinois
3. Grand Rapids Community College, Michigan
(tie) Moraine Valley Community College, Illinois
5. College of DuPage, Illinois
(tie) Lansing Community College, Michigan
7. Illinois Central College, Illinois
8. Sinclair Community College, Ohio
9. Parkland College, Illinois
10. Madison Area Technical College (Truax), Wisconsin
AMATYC
is the only organization exclusively devoted to the improvement of
math instruction in the first two years of college. AMATYC has approximately
2,800 individual members and more than 100 institutional members in
the U.S. and Canada.
