A photo exhibition depicting Middle Eastern lifestyles is the focus of an
Emeritus Program lecture series at Oakton Community College's Ray Hartstein
Campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave., Skokie. The series, Viewing Place and Space:
A Window to Middle Eastern Culture (HUM S27-61), meets Oct. 10 and 17,
from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The accompanying photo exhibit is free to the
public and runs through Oct. 31.
On Friday,
Oct. 10, Ann Cotton, professor of interior design at the College of
DuPage, presents "Symbols in Turkish Tile and Carpet," and Kent Richter,
professor of philosophy and religion at the College of DuPage, presents
"Facing Mecca: Symbols of Direction in Islam."
On Friday,
Oct. 17, another four College of DuPage faculty members will present
lectures entitled, "Historical Models of Holy Spaces and Time in Middle
Eastern Judaism and Christianity," "An Intercultural Crossroad Between
Christians and Muslims in 13th Century Italy: Reflections on Dante's
Divine Comedy," "The Middle East Today," and "Between Jihad
and McWorld: Western Europe, Immigration, and the Rejection of the
Social Democratic Model."
The program
fee is $25 for in-district residents age 60 and over, and $30 for out-of-district
residents and those under 60.
The exhibition
is organized by the Middle East Committee and Liberal Arts Division at the
College of DuPage and supported in part by a grant from the Illinois Humanities
