The
Performing Arts at Oakton puts a modern spin on Shakespeare's classic
comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream," opening March 17 for three
weekends at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines.
Directed
by Mary Ringstad, a member of The Shakespeare Project of Chicago,
this contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's supernatural play-within-a-play
is set in a college town in Ohio. A cast of academics, hippies, and
laborers stand in for the Bard's original cast of fairies, lovers,
and "mechanicals."
In
connection with this production, Oakton presents a free preview lecture,
"Shakespeare in the Modern World," at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 23.
Ringstad will discuss the timelessness of Shakespeare's writing and
how it relates to our everyday lives. The lecture will be held in
the Des Plaines campus theater lobby. Free parking is available in
Lot A.
