"Mileva Einstein" makes its North American premiere at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, in the Footlik Theater at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road.Written by Vida Ognjenovic and directed by Kathleen Carot, "Mileva Einstein" tells the story of Albert Einstein's troubled first marriage to Mileva Maric, his brilliant classmate at the prestigious Swiss Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich. The drama recounts the heady days of their romance and Mileva's eventual slide into depression and obscurity as she abandons her career to care for her husband and children. Like that of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda, the Einsteins' story is steeped in controversy and raises serious questions about Mileva's contribution to her husband's Theory of Relativity.
Ognjenovic, the leading playwright, prose writer, and theater director of Yugoslavia - and its current ambassador to Norway - will attend the premiere and conduct post-show conversations with the cast and audience on Nov. 8, 9 and 15. She is the author of four collections of plays, several collections of short stories, and a novel for which she has received numerous literary prizes. Before her ambassadorship, Ognjenovic was the artistic and managing director of the National Theater in Belgrade and a professor of acting and directing at the University of Novi Sad. She has taught as a visiting professor at UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Minnesota
