Registered nurses seeking careers in community health nursing can benefit from a no-cost program offered this spring by Oakton Community College.Introduction to Community Health for the Registered Nurse (NUR 265) is a seven-credit-hour certificate course that focuses on refining assessment, critical thinking, and case management skills to help nurses function independently in community health care agencies.
A grant from the Helene Fuld Foundation covers tuition, fees, books, and a $400 stipend for a limited number of students. Applicants must be recent graduates (within the last three years) of an associate degree or diploma nursing program; graduate nurses awaiting licensure may also apply. No previous experience in community-based nursing is required.
Multilingual students are especially encouraged to participate in this program, which is oriented toward a culturally diverse clientele.
The theory portion of the course consists of 48 hours of class time, with classes meeting from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 27 through July 17, at Oakton's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. For the clinical portion, students will schedule 120 hours of clinical practice with preceptors in such community settings as hospice, home care, and occupational health.
To learn more about this unique opportunity for nurses, call program coordinator Mary Gibson, R.N., B.S.N., A.P.N./C.N.P., at 708-687-1450.
