The
student newspaper of Oakton Community College, the OCCurrence,
received nine awards - including four first-place honors - at the
Illinois Community College Journalism Association (ICCJA) Spring Conference.
The awards were presented April 14 and 15 in ceremonies at Richland
Community College in Decatur.
Editor-in-chief
George Providence II of Evanston took home first place in the
opinion category for his commentary on Black History Month. In the
editorial category, Alison Howard of Mt. Prospect captured
first for a fall 2004 endorsement of presidential hopeful John Kerry.
Staff
writer Karolina Zarychta of Des Plaines won first place in
the features category for her coverage of "Body Worlds: The Anatomical
Exhibition of Real Human Bodies," at the Museum of Science and Industry.
Production manager Mark Gutierrez of Des Plaines also won first
place in the photography category for his feature on an Iraq War protest
in New York.
Providence won second place in the arts category for his coverage
of the death of singer Ray Charles. Third place awards went to Howard,
for her coverage of the break-up of the band, Phish; business manager
Michael Pistorio of Des Plaines for his sports feature on Oakton
basketball player Brian Clanton; and cartoonist Doug Walker
of Naperville for his freehand cartoon lampooning politician Alan
Keyes' estranged relationship with his lesbian daughter. The OCCurrence
also captured third place for overall excellence.
