A discussion
about the current "One Book, One Chicago" selection, The Things
They Carried, Tim O'Brien's acclaimed collection of short stories
about the war in Vietnam, is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30, at 12:30
p.m., at the Oakton Community College Library, 1600 E. Golf Road.
Part
of the Oakton Library's "Beautiful Minds" series, the panel discussion
will be hosted by Loren Boehm, English professor, John Kuijper, assistant
professor of English, and Bill Taylor, professor and chair of the
department of historical and policy studies.
The
Things They Carried, a finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize
and the National Book Critics Circle Award, is a fictional work that
spans the Vietnam era as well as the decades before and after. In
O'Brien's experience, the weapons and personal items carried by U.S.
soldiers in Vietnam represent survival, the loss of innocence, and
the war's endless legacy.
Oakton's
"Beautiful Minds" programs are free and open to the public; groups
of 10 or more are asked to register by calling the Library Reference
Desk at 847-635-1644. For more information, call Joan Cichon at 847-635-1727
