Psychotherapists
and other health care professionals are invited to attend "The Overindulged
Child: Using Science and Cultural Research in Therapy for Children
and Families," 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, at Oakton
Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. The daylong workshop
is sponsored by Oakton's Alliance for Lifelong Learning and MaineStay
Youth and Family Services in Park Ridge.
Featured speaker Margaret Wehrenberg, Psy.D., is a nationally recognized
expert on the treatment of anxiety and depression, with extensive
training and expertise in the neurobiology of psychological disorders.
Topics include "The Exhausted Child," on the impact of over-scheduling
children; "Children as Consumers"; "Creating Creative Children"; and
more.
Current
studies suggest that the different ways in which parents indulge their
children may create the opposite of the desired result. Overindulged
children may suffer in interpersonal relationships, social confidence,
and the ability to function in school and work.
Registration fee of $75 includes lunch, educational materials, and
Continuing Education Credits (6.5 clock hours) for social workers,
counselors, marriage and family therapists, teachers, and other professionals
(7.5 contact hours for registered nurses).
