Issues
facing African Americans in higher education will be addressed in
a summit, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 15, at Oakton Community College,
1600 E. Golf Road.
The
conference, One Voice, One Village, One Goal: Concerns of
African Americans in Higher Education, is designed to share
information about the role and status of African Americans employed
at community colleges and discuss ways of retaining African American
faculty, staff, administrators, and students in the educational system.
The summit features keynote speaker David Sam, Ph.D., president of
Elgin Community College. A native of Ghana, West Africa, Sam became
Elgin's eighth president in February 2007.
Made
possible by a grant from the Oakton Educational Foundation, the conference
is sponsored by the Pan African Connection, a group of Oakton faculty,
staff, and administrators who serve as advocates for African Americans
and others from the diaspora.
Registration
is $30 (before Jan. 25) and includes summit materials, continental
breakfast, and lunch. After Jan. 25, the registration fee is $45.
