A forum
on how U.S. foreign policy affects the lives of American citizens
will be held 1 - 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 26 at Oakton Community College,
1600 E. Golf Road. The free forum is presented by Oakton Educators
for Social Responsibility with a grant from By the People, a new initiative
of MacNeil/Lehrer Productions. Oakton is one of just eight community
colleges nationwide selected to receive the first-round grants.
The forum
entitled "How Is U.S. Foreign Policy Affecting Your Life?"
will feature an opening panel discussion, followed by breakout
sessions on issues such as information and the media; civil liberties;
children and education and the economy. The event concludes with a
town hall-style meeting at which participants will be encouraged to
share ideas developed during small group sessions, as well as strategies
for taking action on those key issues.
"Our
goal is to create an opportunity for area residents to openly debate
the process and consequences of foreign policy decisions," said Gary
Newhouse, dean of library and media services. "We also hope to provide
resources for continued engagement in this arena."
In addition
to creating public forums, the By the People initiative includes three
national PBS specials, various local PBS programs created in cooperation
with community organizations, and an interactive Web site (www.by-the-people.org).
These events culminate Saturday, Oct. 16, with national PBS Deliberation
Day, featuring a coordinated series of events and public TV broadcasts
designed to energize the national conversation on America's role in
the world. By the People has received initial funding from the William
and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Public Broadcasting System, and
the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Foundation.
