Thirteen area high school students gather with visiting
Middle East students at Oakton Community College, July 14 –
24, during Hands of Peace, a program to promote dialogue
and friendship among Israeli, Palestinian, and American youths.
Each summer, Jewish-Israeli, Palestinian-Israeli, and West Bank Palestinian
youths visit Chicago’s northwest suburbs for a two-week experience
of living together. Christian, Muslim, and Jewish teens from Glenbrook
North, Glenbrook South, Maine East, Niles North, and Palatine high
schools meet at Oakton with 21 students from the Middle East for structured
dialogue and social activities. Local teens play an important role
in the program through their interest in the omnipresent political
conflict, and in developing personal relationships.
Hands of Peace was formed in 2002 through the combined efforts of
Gretchen Grad of Glenview Community Church, Deanna Jacobson of B’Nai
Jehoshua Beth Elohim Synagogue, and Nuha Dabousseh of the Islamic
Cultural Center.
